What Is Smart Traffic Light System?
A smart traffic light system uses information to support signal operation. The useful purchasing question is which functions the project needs, what data supports them and how those functions will be tested. Sensors, networking and artificial intelligence should not be treated as the same capability.
Detection: decide which information is needed
Loops, radar and video can provide different forms of traffic information. Choose the technology for the required variables, detection area and site conditions. Presence detection is not automatically reliable classification, queue estimation or pedestrian detection.
Account for occlusion, environmental conditions, maintenance and behaviour when data is missing. Detection performance should be checked at the actual installation.
Local control: identify the response to the data
A controller may respond to detector calls within a configured plan. That does not, by itself, make the installation adaptive or AI-based. Ask which parameters can change and which limits remain fixed.
Permitted movements, timing limits and clearance conditions remain part of the approved control design. A demand for more green time cannot override incompatible-movement protection.
Coordination and supervision: specify the optional layers
A management centre may collect information, supervise compatible controllers or support network coordination. Some installations operate locally without a centre. Connectivity alone does not demonstrate adaptive optimisation.
Bus priority, remote configuration, analytics and VMS integration each require the appropriate detection, interfaces and operating rules. Confirm them separately rather than assuming they are included.
Measure whether the chosen functions help
Define the baseline and acceptance criteria before procurement. Compare equivalent operating conditions and account for other changes on the network. Also assess reliability, maintenance needs and fallback behaviour.
Provide the site layout, equipment already installed, desired functions and available data. Request a demonstration of the specified functions and documents for the actual configuration.
