Choose the location around a specific movement
Consider the approach to an entrance, junction or loading area where a speed-management need has been identified. Check visibility, radar orientation, obstructions and interference from adjacent traffic.
The installation must not obstruct the route or distract from essential signs. Plan protection for staff and traffic during installation; uninterrupted traffic flow cannot be assumed.
Specify the functions actually required
Basic speed feedback is different from data logging, cameras or remote connectivity. Confirm each requested feature for the proposed model. Anonymous speed records do not, by themselves, identify a driver or repeat offender.
Display colours, symbols and thresholds must be appropriate for the site and local requirements. Do not assume that every unit can distinguish multiple lanes or measure every approaching vehicle.
Measure outcomes rather than promising them
Compare speeds before and after under similar operating conditions. Consider different shifts, vehicle types and changes in site activity when interpreting the results.
A display complements posted limits, pedestrian separation and other site measures. Existing application photographs do not prove a quantified reduction in incidents or a particular commercial relationship.
